Things to do with kids in Arlington VA

Arlington has enough free parks, water play, libraries, and nature centers to fill most weeks. Start with the child's age and the kind of day the family can handle, then choose the shortest useful plan.

Quick answer

For an easy Arlington outing with kids, use Lubber Run Park for a playground with bathrooms and free parking, Virginia Highlands for free daily summer water play with a restroom, Central Library for a calm free indoor stop, or Long Branch Nature Center for live animals and a children's Discovery Room. Older children may enjoy the free DEA Museum after federal security screening. Check the current source before leaving because sprayground status, library construction, programs, and seasonal attractions can change the plan.

Choose by age before choosing by distance

For babies and young toddlers, use Arlington Public Library's Babies and Preschool calendar or a short playground visit with an easy exit. Preschoolers get more from Lubber Run, Hayes Park, Virginia Highlands, and the live animals at Long Branch. Older children may prefer a registered nature program, the DEA Museum, mini golf, climbing, or a longer trail. A nearby place is only useful when the activity fits the child.

Summer water play by bathroom and parking

The official Arlington sprayground page lists four free seasonal spraygrounds. Virginia Highlands runs daily from 10 AM to 8 PM and has a restroom. Hayes has a restroom plus onsite and school overflow parking, but it closes Wednesdays. Drew uses the community center restroom when the building is open and closes Tuesdays. Lyon Village has no restroom, very limited two hour street parking, and closes Thursdays. Long Bridge, Mosaic Park, and Penrose Square are separate interactive water features with different schedules.

The easiest free indoor choices

Central Library is open daily. The patron garage gives two hours of free parking and closes with the library. The library's summer 2026 maintenance notice says work affects elevators, parking, restrooms, the roof, and heating and cooling systems, but the building remains open and all public restrooms are currently available. Check the notice if elevator access affects the visit.

Long Branch and Gulf Branch have live animals, indoor exhibits, restrooms, and limited free parking. General visits are free. Registered programs can have an age, fee, and capacity limit.

For a day when the main question is where the kids can play inside, use the Arlington indoor activities guide. It compares free library pretend play, registered toddler programs, scheduled bounce sessions, nature centers, and the nearest clearly labeled commercial playground.

A free museum for older children

The DEA Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM and admission is free. Adults age eighteen and older need a government photo ID. Every visitor goes through federal security with a bag screening and metal detector. Street parking is limited, and the museum points drivers to paid parking at Pentagon City. This is a better fit for a child interested in science, history, and public safety than for a toddler who mainly needs movement.

Current events belong on current calendars

Use Arlington Public Library's event calendar for storytimes, crafts, makers, and family programs. Use the Arlington Parks and Recreation event calendar for nature programs and county activities. Playdate NoVA keeps confirmed dated events on the current event page instead of copying a changing calendar into this family guide.

Nearby destinations are a separate decision

Scramble Falls Church is a large commercial indoor playground in the directory. The Smithsonian museums add free Washington options when Metro is easier than driving. These are nearby destinations, not Arlington listings. Start with the Arlington choices above and take the extra trip only when it adds something the child actually wants.

The parent logistics that change the answer

For a short outing, choose the closest place with a confirmed restroom. For summer water play, check the closure day before putting children in swimsuits. For a library visit, remember the two hour garage limit. For the DEA Museum, bring the required adult ID and leave prohibited items at home. For a nature program or paid attraction, open the exact registration page before promising the activity.
