Best choice when the kids want activities

Pohick Bay Regional Park is the clearest fit for a hosted holiday weekend. Its 2026 Memorial Day campground schedule included a campfire, wagon rides, a bounce house, outdoor games, movies, tie dye, and a naturalist program. Most activities were for registered campers, and a few carried a small extra fee. The regular campground has 150 shaded sites, including 100 electric sites and 50 tent sites. Peak season campsite prices start at $37 per night before booking fees.

This is the place I would start when a parent wants camping to feel like the weekend plan instead of simply the place where everyone sleeps. The tradeoff is a three night holiday minimum. A fuller activity schedule can also make the campground louder and busier than a quiet tent weekend.

Best choice for a cabin

Bull Run Regional Park has nine rustic cabins that stay open throughout the year. They have electricity, air conditioning, heat, a small refrigerator, beds, and two rooms. Families bring bedding. Two bathhouses provide hot showers, toilets, sinks, and laundry. Two large playgrounds sit near the camp store and restrooms.

Bull Run also has campsites, trails, disc golf, and Atlantis Waterpark during its season. Campsites currently start at $34 per night, and rustic cabins start at $90 before booking fees. The cabins reduce some of the hardest first trip logistics, but they still use campground bathhouses instead of a private bathroom. Holiday reservations require three nights.

Easiest local tent and RV choices

Lake Fairfax Park is the flexible choice. It takes tents and large RVs, has 30 and 50 amp electric sites, showers, fresh water fill, picnic tables, and a fire ring with a grill at each site. Campsites currently run from $32 to $55 per night before the county lodging tax. Holiday stays require two nights.

Burke Lake Park has 100 wooded sites for tents and RVs up to 25 feet. Every site has a table, fire ring, and grill. The campground has a bathhouse with showers, a seasonal camp store, and no electric or water hookups. A family site costs $32 on weekdays or $37 on weekends and holidays before tax. Online reservations are available, and same day walk up camping is allowed when a site remains open.

Farther choices for families ready for fewer comforts

Oak Ridge Campground in Prince William Forest Park has 100 sites from March through November. Each site has a table, paved parking pad, grill, and lantern post. Every loop has flush toilets, but only B loop has showers. There are no hookups or dump station. A site costs $26 per night plus the park entrance fee. Summer campfire talks happen on some weekend evenings, not on a guaranteed schedule.

Sky Meadows State Park is a different kind of trip. Families carry their gear about one mile to a primitive site. The campground has pit toilets, nonpotable water, bear lockers, and no electric sites or bathhouse. Buddy sites can hold two families. The dark sky and astronomy programs are a real draw, but this is not the place I would choose for a first camping night with a toddler.

Hosted family camps worth the longer drive

A NoVA parent shared three Pennsylvania camps that solve more of the weekend than an ordinary campsite. She is trying Deer Valley YMCA Family Camp for the first time during the week beginning July 25, 2026. Her family has attended Camp Conrad Weiser at South Mountain YMCA for Memorial Day four times, and her children also attend a summer week there. They have spent Labor Day at Camp Soles twice.

That parent experience is useful, but the programs are not interchangeable. Deer Valley is a full summer family camp that runs from Saturday to Saturday, with lodging, meals, and activities included. Its site asks new families to submit an interest form because space is limited, and it does not publish a 2026 price on the public page. The July 25 week is a full week, not a weekend stay.

Camp Conrad Weiser's 2026 Memorial Day family camp ran Friday, May 22 through Sunday, May 24, starting at $260 per person. That Sunday checkout is a day shorter than many families expect from Memorial Day weekend. Meals, scheduled activities, cabins, and modern bathhouses are included. Families who want a private cabin pay an additional $240.

Camp Soles runs Friday through Monday for both Memorial Day and Labor Day in 2026. The current public rate is $530 for a cabin wing or room plus $79 per person. Most groups share a cabin building with another family group, although they reserve a separate wing or room. Bathroom access varies by cabin. Meals are included, staff run separate children's activities during part of the day, and parents supervise at other times.

What to reserve before a long weekend

Choose the sleeping setup first. A cabin, electric site, regular tent site, and site reached on foot create completely different weekends. For a hosted family camp, confirm the arrival and departure days before comparing prices. A price for each person, a cabin charge, and a full week rate are not directly comparable.

A pass borrowed through a local library may remove ordinary vehicle parking at a Virginia State Park, but it does not pay for the campsite, cabin, reservation, or separate activity. Check the Virginia State Park library pass guide before counting that saving in the trip budget.

Then check the cancellation rules, bathroom location, included meals, supervision during children's activities, and whether your family will share a cabin. For a first campground trip, keep the plan small. Set up the sleep space, use one playground or short walk, eat, and protect bedtime.
