Herndon farm guide

Frying Pan is one of the easiest free outings in western Fairfax, but the park has two entrances and several activities that operate on different schedules. A little planning keeps the visit simple and prevents a long walk from the wrong parking lot with tired kids.
Frying Pan Farm Park and Kidwell Farm are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and ordinary parking are free for families. Start with the animals, use the playground near the Country Store, and decide whether a $6 wagon ride fits the day. The animals and playground are enough for a full morning without buying a ride.
Weekday mornings are the easiest choice for a short visit. The farm is still working, so mud, animal smells, and uneven natural surfaces are part of the outing. Bring shoes that can handle all three.
Use 2709 West Ox Road in Herndon for Kidwell Farm, the animals, playground, Country Store, and equestrian area. Use 2739 West Ox Road for the Visitor Center and picnic shelter. Both sides have parking, and a natural surface road connects them. With small children, choosing the correct entrance is easier than treating the whole property like one compact parking lot.
The Visitor Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Its schedule matters because it has the most dependable indoor restroom access.
Kidwell Farm represents a working farm from the 1930s. Families can see draft horses, chickens, peacocks, rabbits, sheep, goats, cows, and pigs along with barns, a farmhouse, historic equipment, and crop fields. Visitors may not feed the animals. That rule protects both the animals and little hands that want to offer every snack in the stroller.
The playground remains open near the Country Store and former carousel area. It has slides, climbing equipment, and nearby benches. This pairing makes the park useful even when a child spends only ten minutes looking at animals before asking to climb.
Indoor restrooms are available in the Visitor Center. Restrooms near the picnic shelter and former carousel area are seasonal, generally from late March through late November. If a year round bathroom is the deciding detail, use the Visitor Center during its published hours.
The county does not promise a smooth paved route through every part of the farm. The connection between the two entrances is a natural surface road, and outdoor programs may use muddy or uneven ground. A stroller with larger wheels is more useful than a light travel stroller after rain. The county can also arrange accessibility accommodations when families call ahead.
The 2026 public wagon season runs from March 20 through November 25, weather permitting. Rides operate Monday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets cost $6 for everyone age two and older. Each ride lasts about 30 minutes and holds no more than 20 people.
Weekday tickets may be purchased online or at the Country Store. Weekend tickets are sold in person. The store opens Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather permitting. Call 703 437 9101 before driving over when weather looks uncertain. Classes, camps, horseback riding lessons, and seasonal programs use separate registration and pricing.
The Frying Pan carousel was badly damaged during the January 2026 winter storm. Fairfax County determined that it could not be operated safely, permanently closed it, and removed it. A replacement is planned, but no opening date has been published. Older pages and family memories may still mention the carousel, so this is worth checking before telling a child it will be part of the visit.
Frying Pan farm parties currently serve up to 25 total guests, including adults and children. Published packages start at $300 and can include an animal activity, wagon ride, or planting activity depending on the package. The 2026 party season runs on weekends from March 21 through November 8, excluding August 1 and 2 and October 17 and 18. The official page calls its highest package both Farmyard Extravaganza and Farmyard Deluxe, so confirm the package name and included activities before paying.
School field trips, Scout programs, camps, family programs, and riding lessons are also available. For a normal family morning, none of those reservations are needed. Browse the Herndon parent page, compare other choices in the Northern Virginia farm guide, or use the summer outing guide when heat and water play are part of the decision.
Fairfax County created the park to preserve local farm and rural community life from the 1920s through the 1950s as suburban growth and Dulles Airport changed the surrounding landscape. The original land was deeded to the Park Authority in 1960. The farmhouse, dairy, smokehouse, corn cribs, livestock buildings, crop fields, machinery, and working blacksmith shop are real pieces of that history, not farm themed decorations.
