Summer things to do with kids in Northern Virginia

Curated by real NoVA parents. Reviewed July 2026.

A good summer outing is not just the place with the biggest slide. It is the place that fits the heat, the budget, the ages in the car, and the amount of effort everyone has left. These are the Northern Virginia summer choices that give parents a clear plan before the kids are already wearing swimsuits.

Pick the kind of day first

For a free water morning, choose Our Special Harbor and Chessie's Big Backyard in Alexandria. Loudoun families can check the current splash pad status at Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park in Aldie. For a paid water day, compare The Water Mine at Lake Fairfax with Ocean Dunes at Upton Hill Regional Park. For animals without a large admission bill, use Frying Pan Farm Park or Temple Hall Farm. If the family wants enough play for most of a day, Great Country Farms or Burke Lake Park gives you more than one activity.

Free water play that works for younger kids

Our Special Harbor has no admission charge for an ordinary family visit. From June 20 through August 23, it opens Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends and holidays from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. The quieter area has soft bubblers and water tables for younger children, while Chessie's Big Backyard adds a trail, treehouse, and rubber surface playground. The spray park can reach its 247 person capacity, so an early arrival matters on hot weekends. A permanent restroom and county parking lots are shown on the official park map.

Hanson Regional Park runs its splash pad daily. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through August 16, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from August 17 through September 7, and noon to 6 p.m. from September 8 through September 20. The official splash pad page does not list an admission charge. The park also has several playgrounds, public bathrooms, trails, and multiple parking areas. Nearby pavilion reservations are separate from ordinary splash pad use. See the full Northern Virginia splash pad guide when water play is the whole plan.

Paid water parks and the price difference

The Water Mine is a full water park, not a free splash pad. From June 20 through August 2, it opens weekdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. From August 3 through August 23, it opens daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. County weekday admission is $17.25 for guests over 48 inches and $14.25 for guests under 48 inches. Weekend county prices rise to $18.25 and $15.25. Noncounty admission is $20 on weekdays and $22 on weekends and holidays for every guest older than two. Children age two and younger are free, but every other person entering pays even if an adult does not swim. Tenderfoot Pond and the tot spray area fit younger children. Guests under 48 inches cannot use the three story slides or Box Canyon ropes course.

Ocean Dunes at Upton Hill uses a 42 inch price threshold. From June 20 through August 23, it opens Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Weekday admission is $12 for guests at least 42 inches and $9.50 for shorter guests. Weekend and holiday prices are $16 and $12. The surrounding playground, trails, parking, and restrooms are available without a water park ticket. That makes Upton Hill easier when only part of the family wants paid water play.

Farm mornings before the heat builds

Frying Pan Farm Park is the simplest free animal morning in western Fairfax. Kidwell Farm is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and has cows, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, horses, and historic farm buildings. The playground is near the Country Store. Wagon rides are optional and cost $6 for everyone age two and older. The Frying Pan parent guide explains which of the two entrances to use.

Temple Hall Farm is free for ordinary visits from April through September and has a playground, farmyard, scavenger hunt, and paths that the official site describes as mostly friendly for strollers. Great Country Farms is the larger paid destination. Regular admission is $12 on weekdays and $14 on weekends. Festival admission is $14 on weekdays and $16 on weekends. Children age two and younger are free. The play area, wagon rides, animals, mazes, and putt putt can fill a longer day. Compare all three in the Northern Virginia farm guide.

A mixed age day without buying every extra

Burke Lake Park works when a toddler needs a playground and an older child wants a train, carousel, or mini golf. The park has four playgrounds near restrooms. Fairfax County residents enter free. Noncounty vehicles pay on weekends and holidays during part of the year, and the rides cost extra. Lake Fairfax and Upton Hill follow a similar pattern: the base park can be the outing, while the water park is an optional paid decision.

This is the easiest way to protect the budget. Tell the kids whether the day is a park day or an attraction day before leaving home. The mixed age parks guide compares the places where siblings can choose different activities without splitting the family across town.

The summer checklist I would use

Check the official hours on the morning of the visit because water attractions close for weather and seasonal schedules change in August. Pack water, sunscreen, dry clothes, swim diapers when needed, and shoes for hot pavement. Confirm whether outside food is allowed before packing a cooler. For Water Mine, advance tickets are released two weeks ahead and busy days can reach capacity. For free spray parks, opening time is usually easier than late afternoon.

If storms replace the pool plan, use the rainy day guide for indoor play, libraries, and quieter backups. Use the free outing page when the budget is the first decision, or the weekend page when you need current dated events to pair with a park visit.
